The Samba Team

http://www.samba.org
The Samba Team write software that allows people to collaborate and share files. They have a tough time as there are certain competitive companies who keep deliberately changing their unwritten specifications.(well it is actually written as the US government forced them to publish it, following numerous breeches of the law. The published specification has very little in common with the code, it is said that if the code followed the specification it would not work ;-)

The Samba Team write GPL software which means it is free to change or modify so long as if you publish your changes you must also publish your source. Sounds fair :-)

The Electronic Frontier Foundation

http://www.eff.org
The EFF exists to protect our electronic freedom; however much more important is their protection of our cultural heritage. Note that Disney has made its fortune copying arts in the public domain, such as Beauty and the Beast, Snow White. Disney has successfully campaigned to have copyright extended again and again, resulting in very little new work entering the Public Domain. I can cheaply buy copies of Shakespeare for £2 in a supermarket, as things exist it will be 140 years until we are able to buy modern authors works. This does not help society nor the authors of today. Such a long period solely helps companies such as Disney who have no interest in Public Good, solely their shareholder's votes.

Have a listen to this. It is a speech by Lawrence Lessig, who is Professor of Law at Stanford Law School

You can obtain a transcript of his last public presentation here

FREE THE MOUSE

"While early threats to our right to communicate came from the government, current threats come also from industry, as it seeks to control and expand current revenue sources at the expense of traditional fair use. The trend has been for industry to use a combination of law and technology to suppress the rights of people using technology. Nowhere is this more evident than in the world of copyright law, where the movie and recording studios are trying to dumb down technology to serve their "bottom lines" and manipulate copyright laws to tip the delicate balance toward intellectual property ownership and away from the right to think and speak freely."
