Encryption and Stuff

Encryption should really be used in all communication as it is extremely easy to have your packets rerouted or sniffed. This includes all emails, attachments, communication (SMTP, IMAP and POP3) and other protocols.

Exim (SMTP) is easy to set up to use encryption and it can invite others to encrypt their traffic to you. See Exim and Encryption

POP3 and IMAP are covered here SecureMail

Mozilla (Netscape) makes it very easy to encrypt your mail while sending and receiving. After setting up your account, enter edit -> preferences -> mail and news -> Server settings. Set it always to use SSL when sending in the default SMTP server and check use SSL for all accounts.

Ensure that the webmail that you use is done over https, it is easy to obtain usernames and passwords otherwise.

In the UK the RIP bill allows individuals to be gaoled (jailed) for up to two years for forgetting the password that you have used to encrypt something. Always good to see 'fair and just' laws passed in a 'democracy'.
